Alex Roulette’s Incredible Oil Paintings

Sep 3, 2010 3 comments

Brooklyn-based artist Alex Roulette creates oil based paintings that look incredibly real. In his most recent series titled Fabricated Realism, all the landscapes and subjects that Alex paints are actually invented. They appear to be painted versions of existing photographs, but Roulette is creating events and places and people that never were.

My current series of paintings depict fabricated American landscapes. The invented landscapes arise from archetypal citations of past and present cultural influences. Placing figures into these landscapes is an attempt to take advantage of the viewer’s natural ability to extrapolate narratives. By creating the paintings using a conjuncture of various photographic references, I continue to explore the distinctions between photographic and painted space.

Roulette completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and graphic design from Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, but was already exhibiting his artworks long before. He's been part of group and solo shows since 2005 all over the United States.

  1. Beautiful! I especially love the one of the guy swimming, I know how difficult water is to paint, and he did an exquisite job!
