Moreover, Auschwitz was in fact built in the area annexed by Germany (Third Reich) after invading Poland in 1939. So, even the soil on which Auschwitz - Birkenau camp was built was during this period of time 100% German. On the other hand Poles were the victims of the camp. So you can not say "Polish concentration camp" without any commentary, unless your aim is to insult many people with this article. After all, it was built, staffed and guarded by Germans. Technically, it was not even in Poland at the time because the German's had annexed that portion of Poland and were doing what they wanted there. Including sending thousands of Poles to Auschwitz. In fact, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum ranks Poles as the second-highest ethnic group imprisoned there.

David A. Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, addressed this habit by the media to try using a geographic short-hand to describe where such concentration and death camps were located.

"The camps were located in German-occupied Poland, the European country with by far the largest Jewish population, but they were most emphatically not 'Polish camps'. This is not a mere semantic matter," he said. "Historical integrity and accuracy hang in the balance. Any misrepresentation of Poland's role in the Second World War, whether intentional or accidental, would be most regrettable and therefore should not be left unchallenged."

Writing as a former journalist, I know how important accuracy is to the reputation of news organizations.A correction stating that Auschwitz was a concentration camp built and operated by the Germans in occupied Poland is in order to set the record straight.

Thank you.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8890523669575867377.post-27815001752006651952015-05-06T17:36:29.516+05:302015-05-06T17:36:29.516+05:30"Polish concentration camp in Auschwitz"..."Polish concentration camp in Auschwitz"??????
No such thing as "Polish death camps". Historians at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum have counted 42,500 German concentration camps and ghettos.
