Furthermore, it is the site which caused the phrase "Murphy's Law" to be coined: When the UPRR built the monument, they didn't check to see on whose land they were building. The land belonged to justice of the peace Murphy of Laramie, who promptly sold advertising rights to companies. I have seen one photo of a Bigelow Tea banner festooned across the monument. So, the UPRR sent a lawyer with a briefcase of money and two thugs to Laramie to "convince" Mr Murphy to trade his land rights for a lot on 6th Street in Laramie worth something like $300. Nobody mentioned the thousands of dollars in the briefcase. Murphy went along.
