Oarfish: The longest fish in the world

An oarfish can easily be mistaken for a sea serpent, but they are really the longest bony fish in the sea, growing to fifty feet or more in length. The longest oarfish alive according to the Guinness Book of World Records is 36 feet in length.

oarfish

Oarfish are rare but found worldwide in tropical and temperate waters at depths from the surface to 3,000 feet. Not much is known about their habits and life cycles, but they probably only come to the surface when injured or dying. They feed on very small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates that they filter through their toothless mouths. Oarfish have shiny, silvery bodies, bright red crests on their heads, and are also known as ribbon fish.

Famous landmarks made out of 6 million toothpicks

It took Stan Munro, of North Syracuse, 6 years and more than six million toothpicks and 170 liters of glue to create his Toothpick City – a collection of famous buildings and landmarks all around the world. His amazing Toothpick City contains landmarks like Sydney's Opera House, the Taj Mahal and the Big Ben built to a scale of 1:164. Stan's buildings are largely hollow, with just a few structural supports - also made from the toothpicks he buys direct from a wholesaler.

The International Motor Show (IAA) is the world's largest motor show, held biennially in Frankfurt, Germany. The motor show first made it’s debut as early as 1897 as a mini exhibition in a hotel in Berlin. More than a century later, the 63rd edition of the motor show got underway on 17th September and will continue till 27th September, 2009. This year the event will showcase around 80 production cars as well as a few dozen concept cars. I’ll definitely try to bring pictures of the cars when they are available, but for now let’s enjoy the ladies. :)

Maunsell Forts of the World War 2

The Maunsell Sea Forts in the estuaries of rivers Thames and Mersey were built to help defend the United Kingdom during the second World War. They were designed by Guy Maunsell in 1942 to house anti-aircraft guns and search lights, to shoot down German bombers on air raids. Maunsell designed two kinds of sea fort one for the Army and the other one for the Navy. Guy Maunsell also went on to design the concrete mulberry harbours later on in the War for the D Day Landings. According to historical reports, these forts helped the British Army and Navy shoot down 22 enemy aircraft and about 30 flying bombs.

Betel Nut Beauties

The term Betel nut beauty (also betel nut gir) refers to a common sight along roadsides in Taiwan: a young woman selling betel nuts and cigarettes from a brightly lit glass enclosure while wearing revealing clothing. Though betel nuts are chewed in many regions of the Asia-Pacific, the betel nut beauty phenomenon is distinctly Taiwanese.

Alcatraz Hotel of Germany – A prison turned hotel

If you ever visit the town of Kaiserslautern in Germany, don’t forget to checkout the Alcatraz Hotel. Once a prison, this hotel lets guests get that jailhouse feeling by spending a night behind bars for about 50 Euros. The hotel rooms are actual cells of the prison complete with iron doors, iron grilled windows, metal beds and in-cell toilets. There are also collective showers on each floor. To make the experience complete guests are given pinstriped pajamas to wear for the night!
