An Indian man from Mizoram, in northeastern part of the country, has the largest family in the world with a head count of 181 which include 39 wives, 94 children and 14 daughter-in-laws and 33 grandchildren. 67 year old Ziona Chana and his family live in a 100-room, four-storey house set amidst the hills of Baktwang village in Mizoram.

The family is organized with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organizing her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals. One evening meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 132lb of potatoes and boil up to 220lb of rice.

Ziona keeps the younger wives near his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping farther away. His wives visit his bedroom on rotation basis.

Ziona met his oldest wife, who is three years older than he is, when he was 17. “I once married 10 women in one year,” he is quoted as saying. “Even today, I am ready to expand my family and willing to go to any extent to marry. I have so many people to care (for) and look after, and I consider myself a lucky man.”

Ziona is the head of a local Christian religious sect, called the “Chana,” which allows polygamy. Formed in June 1942, part of the sect’s belief is that they will soon be ruling the world with Christ.

  2. Brave dude.

It looks like he is pretty much together, has a handle on things. I don't know how he manages, he must be some sort of super-man. My own three wives are often a bit too much for me, LOL.

  4. And you wonder why the world is so over populated and lacking in resources. Pure selfishness. Looking at the photo of him and his wives, or the large family pic, barely one of them is smiling...

  6. Don't throw stones too quickly on that over population bit - what is the total carbon footprint of "Ziona Chana and his 39 wives" compared to a typical US family with how many cars and how big a house and how many flights a year to visit Grandma in Hackensack? The gender inequity is loathsome, for sure, absolutely, but number of mouths to feed does not automatically equate to resource abuse.
