Mass Whale Hunting in Faroe Islands Leave Sea Blood Red

The sea of Faroe Islands in north of Europe turned red with the blood of hundreds of whales killed by the inhabitants on November 22, as a part of their annual whale hunting culture. Every year the islanders catch and slaughter pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) during the traditional whale hunt known as 'Grindadrap'. The mass hunting is non-commercial - the whale meat cannot be sold but is divided evenly between members of the local community. The hunters crowd the whales into a bay and then cut their spines leaving the animals bleed to death slowly, while the surrounding sea turns bloody red. These images of a blood-red sea can often have a shocking effect on bystanders.

Being an autonomous province of Denmark, where whaling is banned, the Faroe Islands’ laws allow the mass slaughter of pilot whales, beaked whales and dolphins to observe the annual tradition. Whaling in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic has been practiced since about the time of the first Norse settlements on the islands. The meat and blubber of pilot whales have long been a part of the islanders' national diet.

Despite criticism from animal rights groups and International Whaling Commission, the whale hunting custom continues to kill thousands of whales year after year. Around 950 Long-finned Pilot Whales are killed annually, mainly during the summer.

The American Cetacean Society says that pilot whales are not considered to be endangered, but that there has been a noticeable decrease in their numbers around the Faroe Islands.

    1. Your tradition of killing whales if beautiful, how is filling the ocean with blood a spirited tradition, no these people are just sick and have no respect for life. This cannot be good for the eco-system with mass slaughters. The world is having enough problems with biodiversity, haven't we learned anything from the past extinctions from the human race. This is disgusting and should be stopped as soon as possible.

  7. When all the whales are gone, will you blame yourselves or someone else?

    ReplyDelete
  8. First of all, the whales do not die slowly, when you cut it's spine, death is instant.

The whale is braindead instantly, but the blood does flow slowly from its body.

Second this is far from an annual event, the whales are not hunted, the faroe islanders only kill the animals that have ventured close to islands. This makes it impossible to put whale hunting into a calendar, and plan any killing.

Also the Faroe Islands are not a province of Denmark, and danish law has no say in the Faroe Islands in general. The Faroe Islands share a regent with Denmark, that is it. Do you call Scotland an autonomous province of England?

None of the images used in this article are from the killing on 22. november. These are old images, and from a completely different town.

The pilot whale is the only whale that the Faroese kill. Dolphins and beaked whales are not killed in the Faroe Islands, as they are a rare sight. Keep in mind, that the faroese do not hunt or search for the whales, the beaked whale rarely ventures close to the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands have strict laws against killing endangered species, and the faroese are in general against any killing of endangered species. The Faroe Islanders also take great pride in preserving the whales, as well as this 1000 year old tradition. Noone wants to endanger the whales, that sentiment is just stupid.

Get your facts straight the next time. This article seems to be an attempt to disguise anti-whaling propagande as serious journalism.

    2. You probably won't ever see this, but before you attack them you should check your own facts. The Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of Denmark. Show me any legit source that says otherwise besides your own personal opinion. You will quickly discover there isn't one since Denmark owns the Faroe Islands.

This is nothing but barbaric and sick. The scary part is actually how MANY people are in these pictures, humans are the worst thing on this planet for sure and the Danish proved it along with many others.

    3. whale meat is extemly poison: in dolphin and whale meat you find all levels of mercury, methyl mercury, cadmium, DDT and PCBs. More than 91% of the samples from dolphins and small whales, exceeded the limits for one or more pollutants.

One sample had more than 1,600 times the maximum permitted amount of mercury.

Due to their exclusive seafood diet, dolphins and whales accumulate high levels of chemicals in their tissue. When humans consume their meat, gradual poisoning can occur.

It is a fact that some researchers recommend not to use whale meat for human consumption any more..

Pilot Whale is considered as ”data deficient” species in the Red List of Threatened species. Long-finned pilot whales, like all marine mammals, are protected under the MMPA.CITES Appendix II - throughout its range.

  14. Just because some barbaric killing ritual has been passed on for generations, doesn't make it noble. Families and communities can be brought together in better ways, ways that benefit life. Like planting trees, rescuing abandoned and hurt animals, a community musical festival. Stop the mindless killing, there's enough being done by evil people.

  21. I cam see it from both sides. The faroes do look whale for food but maybe not I'm a way that the world may see fit. People around the world eatany different things such as dogs, hamsters, chickens, cow, cats, and pigs. The main difference is that the faroes come together and do a mass slaughter. They still use the meat for food and enjoy it just as we enjoy whatever meet we eat. Some of it may do with traditions that the rest of the world doesn't agree with but they are surviving just like neother country.

And if you cannot afford to be a vegetarian then, get your food from another source, not wild animals that they have to bring to slaughter.

      Delete
    2. Now this has to be the most ignorant and close-minded comment in the thread. The wordings in the article make it obvious that this article has a hidden undertone. If you get emotionally upset by that, then you're the ignorant one.

"...just buy meat at the store..."
Where do you think meat at the store comes from? KILLING an animal, right?

Have you ever seen a cow or pig get slaughtered in a slaughter house? It's a whole lot worse than these whales.

"...get your food from another source..."
And who are you to tell these people where to get their food from? The food Police?

I see people use words like "mass murder" and when it's little more than food harvesting. Different people in the world have different cultures and traditions, and we need to respect that. If you don't agree with them, I suggest you go to the nearest Black Angus and choke on a cow dick.

  25. i just wanted to add to my previous comment that i think that most people would not like there children watching anything being killed on tv, they would be upset, yet these people are letting there children watch a frenzied killing of whales with all kinds of weapons by friends and familly surely this must be disturbing and damaging , especially as most crime these days are blamed on what people let there children see and do ,

    ReplyDelete
  26. Except... People don't care about children when it comes to animal dying for food. People hunt deer/bear/turkey with their children... To teach them how to hunt correctly so that the food is obtained in the most humane and healthy way. If anything children SHOULD know where their food comes from. If I had a child, and they asked me where steak/chicken fingers/bacon/fish sticks or whatever animal product, I would tell them, and then show them how it's done... Of course, I live on a farm, so I know where my food comes from... So many people are detached from where their food comes from... THAT is unhealthy! I miss the days where Animal Planet was about how lions hunted their prey... Now it's all about pets and saving animals... Animals are going to die, whether we like it or not. It's kinda like hiding sex from a kid. It's gonna happen... whether we like or not, so we might as well teach them the proper way to go about it.
Oh, and those "hatchets" are grindaknivur- a special knife used to sever the spine... While the animal may be alive for a minute or two, once the spine is cut, it can no longer feel pain. All the pain/pressure/heat sensors send out electrical signals, but without the brain to process said signals, they fizzle out, and the whale is essentially a paraplegic with no organ function.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i know what you see them using in these pictures are, i have seen other pictures of them hacking away in a bloodied frenzie, and they are not killed instantly, they are driven into the coves terified and trying to escape. would you take your children if you have any into your feild full of animals and start hacking into them, then offer them dinner,i do aggree that everyone should know where there food comes from ,but the authorities on the faroe isles tell most of the women and children shouldnt eat whale meat because of high levels of poisens in it ,and anyway this is just barbaric and there a lot of traditions in that area they wouldnt want carried out today so let this one die out with the rest, they would probably be able to make money from whale and dolphin watching and earn the respect of the world apart from the japenese.

  28. Okey everybody! Im a 16 year old girl, from the Faroe Islands. And i'am sick of all you people, who are saying shit about us! you don't know anything about whale killing. You probably heard some propaganda from paul watson!
Do you care for your animals than? do you eat chicken that are suffering? or you didn't know? do you eat pigs meat? you think they had a happy life, at least the whales were nicely swimming all their lives. your pigs, cows and chicken, have a shit life, but because they don't look so cute, and becauase you all don't want to give up eating this shit, it doesn't suit you to go against that. it only suits you to go agains something that is far from your own bed. so please, take a look around you and wake up.
There are thousands of whales in the sea, all over the world, and we are only killing few whales, i could say maybe 1000 in one year? and there are about 200.000 in the world?
And when we kill it in 3 seconds, and it feels no pain.
And i think that i know more about it, because i live in the Faroe Islands, so please stop talking, if you don't know what you are talking about. thank you

Also the "suckling pig" which is like a traditional dish.. little baby pigs being killed .. or veal .. i mean all animal death is kinda cruel if your really think about it.. if they are severing the whales spine and they have a relatively short death.. i think its more humane the the bull fights. which is also tradition. im a meat eater, id like to try anything once. we need meat to live, i mean you could be a vegan/vegetarian but you have to make sure to take protein supplements.. screw that is rather just go eat a nice porterhouse! idk, my opinion! - Jamie 26/F/USA

  60. when read this article and saw the images of this "whale hunt" i saw nothing but a big monstrosity! its so sad because they have no way to defend themselves from the cruelty of the humans that are doing this to them. i been reading about the topic and i do understand the faroe island people that they need whale meet and its been done for centuries as food source but it doesn't make it less then a cruel tradition to kill schools of (pilot whales) where hundreds of "pregnant whales, mothers and calves" are dragged to shore with steel hooks where they slice their necks an just bleed to death. witch explains the horrifying image of the bloody sea, they can say what they want but is just horrible what they do to get the meet and blubber even when they have been "warned by the faroese health leaders that is not safe to consume anymore due to high levels of mercury within the whales" that rite there is a good enough reason to STOP the "GRIND" as they call it. but they continue to do it . so its looks like it just became a brutal annually event that they practice.

    1. The pig is widely considered one of the smartest animals on our planet. They possesses problem solving creativity, the ability to recollect information for years, and is one of the more personable animals among us. The pig is an animal that has been farmed and used as a source of food for centuries. Is there anything wrong with farming pigs? no - humans are omnivores and we have perfected our methods for provided for our diet. What about deer and elk? we've hunted and ate these animals for centuries as well. Is this wrong? no - it provides for our diet as well.

All that is happening here is a group of people hunting an animal. Nothing more. Take a step back and realize that they are being responsible with their actions, they're hunting the animals cleanly and efficiently, and they are utilizing as much of the animal as possible. The only reason this is being considered a travesty is that popular culture has decided to make the act of hunting whales 'inhumane' and 'insensitive' when in fact that is far from the truth.

    1. I think you meant, "how bloody dare anyone say that it's acceptable." And the caps lock key is on the left of the keyboard, between the Tab and Shift keys. Try turning it off once in a while; and while you're at it, try to properly punctuate your sentences, too. People tend to understand your messages better when they're properly written and NOT IN ALL CAPS.

  66. i understand that this is for food and used to be responsible hunting but its turned into a tradition where stupid youths think its cool and funny, like rioting is that really because of the reason they say it is or is it because they just want to damage and steal and be what these lowlives think is "cool" . i generally dont have any clue and cant even get my head around how anyone can be so disgraceful and heartless

    1. I still don't know what "coz" really means; why can't people learn proper spelling and grammar before trying to insult people.

I'm sure you don't like your throat slit either, but you DO eat chicken, pork and beef, right?

I won't even berate myself to your level by trying, and failing, to insult with profanity.

  68. I'd eat it. Imagine the difference between them and the commercial Japanese. It is part of their culture and it maybe looks a bit 'dramatic' it is not worse than all those chicken farms etc. we have in our lands.
