Anamorphic Sculptures by Jonty Hurwitz

If you thought anamorphic art was extraordinary, how about anamorphic sculpture? South African artist Jonty Hurwitz makes incredible sculptures that appear abstract at first glance, but when viewed on a reflective cylinder reveals a distinct form. To create the effect, Hurwitz scans objects and then distorts them using 3D software before moulding them out of perspex, steel, resin, or copper.

Hurwitz begins by scanning the 3D object in his lab and work the model using Mathematica or a range of 3D software tools. Much of it is mathematical, relying on processing power, but there is also a lot of hand manipulation to make it all work properly as spatial transformation have a subtle sweet spot which can only be found by eye.

Jonty Hurwitz was born in Johannesburg in 1969. Now he lives and works in London.
