Tropical Extravaganza is an annual orchid exhibition held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, to celebrate biodiversity. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the orchid exhibition. Running from 6 February to 7 March, the event will take place in the Princess of Wales Conservatory and kick’s off Kew’s Year of Biodiversity, a year long programme of events celebrating the importance of plants in the UN’s International Year of Biodiversity.
The event will feature an island made of orchids and tropical plants with diverse colours and shapes. It will include plants like Miltassias, Dendrobiums and Prosthechea cochleata. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the exhibition, visitors will be able to tour the orchid nurseries in the Tropical Nursery, an area usually closed to the public.
Throughout the festival there will be a tropical food display in the Secluded Garden Glasshouse which is open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays, 2pm-4pm.
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is part of the worldwide celebrations of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, and is one of more than 300 UK organizations, charities and groups supporting this global awareness campaign.
