The Death Camps of Auschwitz: Then and Now

Auschwitz was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated in occupied Poland by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It was the largest of the German concentration camps. From spring 1942 until the fall of 1944, transport trains delivered Jews to the camp's gas chambers from all over Nazi-occupied Europe and nearly three million people had died there. On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops, a day commemorated around the world as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In 1947, Poland founded a museum on the site of Auschwitz I and II, which by 1994 had seen 22 million visitors—700,000 annually—pass through the iron gates crowned with the infamous motto.

Watercolor Paintings by Christopher St. Leger

I scan buildings and slabs that fly past. They are my resource for shape, scale, and color. I am particularly fond of forms and surfaces gently leveled and watered down to street essence. Such places suggest inadvertency and compliance in blending. In recreating such settings, I blanket an already obscure image, washing out further any dangling details. To render this all fittingly establishes a personal hideout from the caffeinated pulling from every direction.

Amazing Realistic Tiger Painted on Human Bodies

Remember Craig Tracy, the body art artist? This time he paints a tiger on the bodies of three female models at the request of British charity Save China's Tigers. First he prepares a background for the work and then the models are painted in stages.

Celebrity look a-likes: ISN’T by Chris Buck

Canadian photographer Chris Buck's photography series ISN’t portraits celebrity look-a-likes that simply aren’t (isn’t). I have seen many celebrity look a-like photos before but never they have been done so brilliantly.

“A lot of celebrity portraits tend to be nice pictures of the celebrity looking presentable; they tend to be more glamorous than curious, but I lean more toward the curious.”, Chris explains. “People often look a bit uneasy or uncomfortable in my pictures. In a way, I find vulnerability more interesting than confidence. It’s not that I want people to look bad, but I think humanity is shown more through vulnerability than through heroism. I think a lot of portraits look heroic, and as a viewer I don’t find it interesting to look at a picture of someone celebrating himself as a great person in a literal way.”

Is it a Car or a Bike or What?

It’s not a bike for sure. It looks like a three-wheeled car when parked, but wait until you see it on the road.

Cologne Carnival 2010 Floats

The Cologne Carnival, that takes place every year in Cologne, Germany, is an orgy of political satire as floats making fun of world leaders take to the streets. This year US President Obama and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi among various others were the targets.

US President Barack Obama has found his way onto a number of floats that will parade through the streets of Cologne on Rose Monday. Here, Obama is seen with the Nobel Peace Prize under his arm and his briefcase alludes to his efforts at arms reduction. And what is Lady Liberty doing? Apparently setting his ass on fire. Here is another view.

Kulula Air Planes Get Witty Redesign

Kulula Air is a low-fare 737 carrier based in South Africa. Recently the airlines received an unusual paint scheme. The entire airplane is covered with details about the plane, with arrows pointing to the most important parts including little bits of clever commentary. Someone there clearly has a sense of humor.

In Memory of Spirit, the Mars Rover

Spirit, the first of the two rovers NASA sent to explore Mars, landed successfully on January 4, 2004 and went on to function spectacularly outliving the planned 90-day mission by over 20 times. Spirit stayed on the Red Planet for a record 6 years and drove 10 km, 10 times more than planned. During the last 6 years the remote controlled robot sent unprecedented information on the geology and atmosphere of Mars.
