“Greetings to the Sun” – A Solar Powered Light Installation in Croatia

Feb 7, 2015 2 comments

Greetings to the Sun is a permanent art installation located on the waterfront of the vibrant medieval port city of Zadar in Croatia. Created by noted Zadar architect Nikola Bašić, the installation consist of three hundred multi-layered glass plates arranged in a circle, encasing solar cells that absorb sunlight during the day. After sunset, the glass plates produce a brilliant animated light show powered by the energy absorbed during the day. The solar energy absorbed by the solar panels is used to power not only the light display, but also a portion of Zadar's waterfront for a third of the cost. It is estimated that the display generates about 46,500 kWh of electricity a year.

The installation covers an area of a circle 22 meters in diameter surrounded by a metal ring that bears the engraved names of Zadar’s saints along with the date of their feast days, the declination of the Sun from the north or the south of the Equator, and the altitude of the Sun’s meridian on the date of that saint’s day, making the whole installation a kind of calendar.

Greetings to the Sun is accompanied by another fine installation by the same artist - Sea Organ. The Sea Organ, located in the west part of the promenade, is a massive musical instrument consisting of 35 pipes of varying length, diameters and inclinations that converts the rhythm of the waves into amazing melodies.
